On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
